Ian Harris

After studying painting, printmaking, and ceramics at St Luke’s College Exeter, Ian Harris went on to teach ceramics and sculpture for many years at schools in Essex, Kent and Dorset. He now lives and works in the beautiful village of Corfe Castle at the heart of the Isle of Purbeck, in Dorset.

Over the last past forty years he has been honing and developing a unique range of hand built stoneware vases and bowls, all based on his observations of natural forms.

Every piece is individually created. Improvising around a theme he uses objects such as beach pebbles, seashells, seedpods and clusters of garden bulbs as initial inspiration.

The curved organic forms that he creates are further enhanced by the heavy use of texture, metal oxides rubbed into the surface. Recent work has included a series of coiled bowls echoing the rhythms and shapes of the Dorset landscape. The rolling hills and rugged coastline of the Isle of Purbeck provide the inspiration for the carved and textured detail that is cut into the surface of the clay.

Ian Harris’s work has gone to private collections in America, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, and Holland.

We have shown samples of Ian's work, sizes and price of individual prices vary. Prices range from £30 upwards.
